You may well ask why I want to do this to my japanese 1.5 PSP? Well i got it for my young son and he finds it to complicated to work. So if I upgrade the firmware via one of his games will it play UMD's without problems?
MY other option is to sell this one along with the 4GB HDD and buy him a new giga pack.
Thoughts please

errrrrrrr why dont you try it and see? there really is no other answer you are looking for

Because if it Bork's the psp I am shafted! Others with more knowledge than I on these matters may have a clear answer.

There should be no trouble upgrading from 1.5 to a newer firmware, i had a US psp and upgraded from 1.5 to 2.6 via the jap firmware at the time, and it worked fine.
However, it wont change the way it runs much, so wont make it any easyier for your son to use, and umd's should play fine either way, the firmware wont change that.

Unfortunately the discussion of anything to do with homebrew software or even fringe "legal" modification of hardware is against the rules here (and for good reason).

Threads discussing the PSP and version 1.5 firmware are almost always closed, and that link is definitely against the rules anyway.

Which is a shame really (though I can see why). It'd be nice talk about this stuff with people that can read and write.
