the macbook had a faulty board so it was stripped parts. I have a 2.5 inch 120gb hdd. I was wondering can i connect it to windows using an external caddy and format it and then use it for storage etc...
Search for a program called macdrive. Macs don't use ntfs as a drive format, they use hfs. As such, without a program such as macdrive installed, windows won't be able to see the drive - even to format it.

Yes. As mentioned. Windows wont see the drive until you format it. Either download the said program or boot into something like "parted magic" and format it from there. It's free and you burn the downloaded .iso. Really easy to do.
