Can I connect an MP3 player directly to a DAC for improved sound quality?

I'm a bit behind the times with digital formats as I play mainly vinyl. I listen a lot on my ipod/mp3 players and my library of ripped CD's on my hard drive is expanding rapidly?

For better sound quality can I connect an ipod/MP3 player directly to a DAC or upsampler which is itself connected to my main system?

What amp do you use in your main system?

I have a VTL 5.5 valve pre-amp. It has an on board phono stage as I listen mostly to vinyl.

But, as I now have a lot of MP3 music files I was wondering if they can be upsampled and played through my main system....
