Can I connect GPU's HDMI to monitor's DVI?

Dear all,

After recently getting in a bit of a mess trying to connect a GPU's DVI into a monitor's DisplayPort using a passive adapter, I thought I'd check here before spending on adapters and cables.

I have an R9 290 that is currently powering three monitors, and the final port on the card is an HDMI. I want to connect this to a monitor with a DVI port.

Will any old cable/adapter do, or would it need to be an active adapter?

Your knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Hugh

You might run into an issue with using all 4 outputs on the 290. The card has two clock generators, and any DVI & HDMI connections will require a clock signal, where DisplayPort does not. AMD does have a clever system to share a clock generator over two monitors, but they need to be identical makes & models and both present at boot up for this to work.

Active DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI/VGA adapters have their own clock generators built-in, where Passive ones don't so Passive ones use one of the 290's two generators - hence why people often find they don't work in multi-screen setups.

You mention you're already using the other connections on your card - could you list which connections you're using to which screen input, and the make & model of each monitor? The more specific you can be, the better chance there is of being able to tell if it'll work before buying anything. :)
