If your system came with HP, then the number on your COA sticker will not work for win 7 pro. However, if it is a dell win 7 pro, then it would work, but wont be legal. If HP to HP, then it won't affect your warranty if you use a disc, but you will lose your D Restore partition on your Hard Drive.

The software for students disc
the pro version, did it come with a licence key code of its own?
has this keycode been used elsewhere already?
are you a student currently attending?

If so, then yes you can install, it will be legal, and it will work, do be careful on laptops before you fully reinstall, make sure to have all drivers, esp network drivers on a usb key, in case they are not part of the initial installation.

You can upgrade using the Software from Students disc without doing any damage to your warranty. Beware, when you upgrade to pro, your D Restore partition on your HD will get damaged. Make sure you make a set of backup disc's using the dell software provided.
