Can I exchange these notes at an UK bank?

From the small picture they look like a mix of Scottish notes? Yes, they're Sterling which is fine.

edit - clicking makes it bigger; yes you will have no problem. You can spend them in shops if you wish.

Is that just bog standard Scottish money if so most big shops in England will take it, some will kick up a fuss mainly as the teenage till staff will never have seen them and won't want to be responsible for a didgy note in the till!

All english shops will take them. Tell them to get over themselves, point out the fact its "Sterling" as printed on the note and carry on.

If its at a petrol station or the likes and they refuse the notes then simply drive on. If they refuse payment then theres nothing you can do :)

Hmmph! I remember when I used to go on holiday to Blackpool years ago we had to change our Scottish notes for English ones at the bank because a lot of the shops refused to take the notes.

Bloody insulting!

No they don't at all. The closer you are to Scotland that may be true but where I am there are loads of places that refuse any non BoE bank notes be they Scottish or N.Irish.

No these are of no use to any UK bank or shop, but I can exchange them for 30% of their value if you like..I'm a, erm, collector of sorts. ;)

I did something similar in a shop in Bournemouth. They refused to take my Scottish tenner for a packet of fags so I just took the fags and walked out. They chased me out the shop and accused me of stealing. I pointed out that I had in fact offered payment but that they had refused. They then reluctantly agreed to take my money.

They don't have to accept them either, it is down to the individual business to decide if they are an acceptable for of payment in the same way a business can refuse cheques or card payments.

If you leave a petrol station without paying you are liable to prosecution. Showing up with Scotish money and insisting they accept it is the same as showing up and offering a cheque it is up to the business.

well its a grey area, the term bilking I believed is used because its not always as clear cut as theft (unless their car is filled up with containers to maximise the crime!), but if you tried to pay for the petrol and were refused (for whatever reason) then driving off would be knowingly stealing.

So I suppose you would actually just be instantly nicked as far as the letter of the law goes

in real terms you would leave your tax disc/mobile, drive to a bank and change the offending notes (:p) for currency which the vendor is content to accept

thats my take on it

Scottish, or Northern Irish and Channel Island notes aren't actually legal tender ;) They can be claimed back from the Bank of England, but strictly speaking no one anywhere has to accept them.

Are Channel Island notes even Sterling?
edit - it seems so, just not printed on the note

Err Zefan, having worked for banks for most of my working life, I know exactly what I'm talking about, and it's not pants at all in any way shape or form.

Only Bank of England notes are legal tender in England and Wales. Scottish and Northern Irish notes are not legal tender anywhere at all. Notes from the channel isle's are only legal on their respective islands. No one "HAS" to accept any of these notes anywhere.
