Hi all,

For the last 10+ years I have used my PS3 for DVD and Blue-Ray watching, I never use if for gaming.
It has been great but wondered recently (as the controller is a bit of faff as a remote) , would I notice any visible difference if I were to get a stand-alone DVD player? I mostly watch older/classic stuff which is not available in BR.

TV is a Q65BA 43" Samsung.

Thank you

Yeah and good point TheVoice I may well do that as I do think the PS3 serves it purpose well and it has never let me down. Just that it looks a bit dated on my shelf but mainly (on the brief looking of more modern standalone DVD players) - I didn't know if I was missing out on something else (I see Upscaling is now almost a standard etc.) and I presume read-speed would be improved too?

I seem to remember Oppo being the DVD/Bluray player to go for. I can’t imagine you’d notice much of an increase in quality though.

Personally I’d stick with the PS3 and get a remote.

I have always used my Playstations as dvd and Blu-ray players, they're plenty good enough.
I wouldn't buy one just for that purpose but I don't see a good enough reason to have a separate player as well as.
As above get the remote that makes it a lot nicer to use.

Dedicated players are much quieter. IR remote control.

Okay, i guess that could be worth £100+ to some people. Why is an IR remote a plus point? Give me a Bluetooth one any day.

Because I use the other following remotes with one IR programmable, Can that PS3 BT remote control all these?

Backlight
Audio Streamer
Video Streamer
TV
Amplifier
DVD player

Plus have macros, power on, power off, activities etc. No need for stupid phone with stupid app

The OP hasn't mentioned any of that so not sure it's applicable to them.
My amp turns on with my TV and auto switches to which ever input, that's what HDMI Control is for.

I would imagine that you'd save a lot of power using a modern player, which would be a big decider for me as I've been trying to cut back where I can.

HDMI CEC sucks. I don't want my devices auto switching on and off, switching inputs, without my direct intervention.

Put a movie on, then whilst your AVR and TV is on, switch your BD player off. But you still wanted the TV and AVR on because you want to watch Youtube app. ho ho ho.

Or switch on another source, but you don't want the TV and AVR switching input yet. ho ho ho

Weirdly I find cec works fine on the latest exbox but I get those issues you mention on my ps4 and ps5.

Good for you. Again OP hasnt asked anything about any of that. So your only point was that it may be quieter to get a dedicated player, which is a good point but maybe not worth the extra money.

Lack of HDR, native 4K UHD, 4K scaling, multi DVD region, Atmos, DTS X out? Can PS3 do that?
Now your just being silly.
If OP has been using a PS3 all this time do you think 4k is a requirement, or HDR?

OP is any of that a requirement?
Just because something suites you doesn't mean everyone needs it.

I've never used mine for DVD/Blu-Ray playback, I've only ever gone for dedicated devices, especially now with 4K.

One thought with using a PS3 is would the fan be noisy?

Also what would the power usage be like compared to newer dedicated players? There has been a power usage competition between brands for at least the last 10 years.
