Hi all,

Changing jobs and will have to give my company car back, but I was wondering if anyone knows if I'm likely to be able to get anything decent/tidy/reliable for under 1k to tide me over until I pass my probabtion at a new job and can afford something nicer?

Where is the best place to hunt for such a beast?

Anything people would recommend? Anything to avoid?

Discuss :p

Thanks very much :)

I would've recomended a 306 in the meridian trim (99 onwards so it's half leather) but then that doesn't fit your reliable criteria.
I think they've (well the phase3) aged well and still look decent today.

No.

This thread screams Mk3 2.0 Mondeo, haggle someone on the price to get it sub £1k.

I have a top spec 306 which is probably worth around the 1k mark now, cant recommend them enough especially the HDI 2.0 Diesel model.

that looks very cheap to the point where it's suspicious.
It looks like it's close to you go see it with your eyes wide open and if it's as good as it sounds snatch it right away.

Got through to them on the phone and they said it was mis priced and should be £1999. Putting it outside of my budget.

What about something like this:

...and before people start pointing out reliability, as long as you pick up one that's allready had its head gasket done these are as pretty reliable and a lot of fun to drive.

That actually looks good and isn't too bad on the insurance but it's about 330miles away from SL85AU :(

I really don't wantto have to go that far just to check something out.

Thanks though :)

No problem. 1k is about the going rate for those ZS's, you should easily be able to find one closer to you for the 1k mark.

Mpg an issue for you? If not my £600 jeep Cherokee has been faultless for the last year. A simple fluid change every year keeps them on the road pretty much. Leather seats, air con, electric windows, mirrors and seats. Soft, squishy and much like driving around in your armchair most of the time.

Sold my 98 e36 328i coupe for under a grand a year or so ago - car was still in lovely condition and there are plenty of them around so long as you don't mind not having a sport. Insurance was dirt cheap, parts are cheap - mpg not great but you cant have it all.

It's not neccesarily the most sensible choice, but if you like driving you'll appreciate it

2002 mondy for £770 in the first link... Jesus! Was saying the same about a 2006 new shape focus just the other day at 2k. You really can get a lot for your money these days!

just check the clutch, when i was buying a cheap mondeo 18months ago loads had dodgy clutches and not a cheap change
