Can I get rid of the lyrics in a song?

Right, I have an mp3, it's promotional from a website, and they have a really nice tune but unfortunately the lyrics are damn lame. Is there a way that I can remove the dude singing and leave only the melody playing? Or is that only possible on sci-fi films? :o

It's pretty much impossible from an .MP3.

You could try searching for a MIDI or somethign, but it won't sound as good.

Could you not filter them out , and then re record using total recorder or something like that  I'm far from an expert but surely you would be able to filter the vocals out

Not without filtering out treble frequencies that the instrumentals use as well ;)

You can filter out almost anything, but requires a lot of skill and knowledge, I don't know how but I've seen stuff filtered out of the most distorted sounds...

And a hell of a lot of time. Also, you'd need to patch up the music after you did all the filtering. It's not pratically feasible unless it's a matter of national security or something.

Apparently there's a plug-in for dBpoweramp which claims to do it.

There's a brief discussion here on another forum I frequent.

If you're expecting to retain decent quality though, it's not going to happen. You'd be better of trying to obtain a karaoke version or something.

the only real way of doing it is by getting hold of the original multi-track source file (cubase file or whatever) which has all the instruments and vocals on independent layers. But those are kept by the record companies or by the producers. Normally kept on DAT files.

Other plugins and stuff claim to do it but not without ruining the music quality
