ive got a 600watt power supply and my system at the moment is as follows:

Asus p45q-e motherboard
600 watt psu
ati x1900xtx
xfi fatality sound card
Intel core duo [email protected]
corsair dominator pc2 8500
artic freezer pro7
seagate 250gb hdd

Will the 4870 be too much for my current set up or shall i get a 4850 to be on the safe side. Also i only play games max 1280x1024 so do i really need a 4870?

I'm on sk.939 (see sig) and have a 4870. I only game at 1280 also so the bottleneck does not really kick-in. I'm able to run all my games at max quality and AA/AF. I'd doubt you see any bottleneck on your rig.

I think the price difference is worth the extra, so go with the 4870 - it will make a hige upgrade over your rig as that x1900 must really hold you back.

Edit: regarding if your 600w is upto the job - it depends entirely on what make you have? If its a decent brand you will have no problems. If its a generic make I would not use it.

4780 = Overkill at that res imo

agreed, only get the 4870 if you plan on upgrading the screen in the future perhaps? And even if you are going to, might be worth getting a cheaper card for now, and then splash out on a new screen+gfx card later on saving the money in the mean time :D

/edit yes the psu can handle that ;)

My setup:

Athlon 64 X2 6400 BE
Gigabyte GA-MA790xDS4
Gigabyte Radeon 4870
2x2gb DDR800
Samsung F1 750gb
Samsung T166 320gb x2
Pioneer 111 DVD/RW
Seasonic S12-600

Power's absolutely fine on that lot. Got a few host powered USB bits on top of that as well, but it's fine so far.
