I have a cheap Asus DG card and I was about to upgrade to a Asus STX for better gaming quality with some better headphones I have bought.

Rather than upgrading my sound card couldnt I just buy a FiiO E17 and enjoy better sound quality + I will be able to make more uses out of it with other devices I have like my PS3 Blueray player

So my main question is

Asus DG + FiiO E17 or just buy a STX ?

E17 has SPDIF toslink/coaxial input, so you can connect it to the DG and still use DH. It would be a good purchase. I'm sure someone bought an E17 whilst owning an Essence, and thought it compared pretty well to the Essence. Can't remember who it was though.

Some say it doesn't? That's interesting. First time I've seen someone say that. I know some people that bought the Zero DAC and used that with a DG. I'm pretty sure some used DH from his DG to the Zero with no trouble. E17 is a DAC, just as the Zero is, so if one works with DH, no reason why the other should not.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. You can enable DH and PCM out. It works with a D2/X, as confirmed by another user. Quoted from another thread: "I've got it hooked up to my D2X via optical running 192KHz PCM and I can enable / disable Dolby Headphone along with that at will when I'm gaming."
