As above really, a Packard Bell F7 series laptop with a P4 3.06 Ghz CPU and 192Mb RAM. Currently running XP SP3 on it.

Will W7 even install or will it throw a wobbly during setup and point blank refuse to go any further when it realises the amount of RAM on the system is as low?.

If it will install, do you reckon it will run reasonably enough to do basic day to day stuff like Word, surf the web etc?. I seem to recall installing W7 on an Asus Eee netbook a while ago and it ran pretty well but I can't remember how much RAM that was running.

Cheers guys, I think I'll just stick with XP on it then. It's not my laptop, it belongs to a friend who has bought a new laptop and was going to give this to his father to do basic stuff like browse the net with etc. I just did a factory restore, uninstalled a load of superfluous rubbish off it and dropped Avast AV on there for him. Was just wondering if it would be worth trying to bring the OS up to date but on second thoughts, I'll pass.

Just a micro thought, could have 256MB with shared graphics of 64MB, giving the 192MB figure :)

That would make sense, yeah. I had a look and it is indeed a 256Mb stick in there. I've added another 512Mb that I had lying around gathering dust and it's made a fair bit of difference compared to the 256Mb treacle-fest. :D
