Swapping motherboard in the near future, however keeping GPU, RAM and what not.

Obviously Windows activates itself against your hardware, so how can I activate it after I swap the motherboard over? Or is this not possible?

I've kept the same version for years! I started with Win 7 pro -> upgraded to Win 8 -> and then used free upgrade to Windows 10 after this.

This is absolutely possible as it is exactly what I did recently going from a 3770K mobo to 6700K. My install is also years old, from 2009 even :p

1: Make sure you're signed into a Microsoft account on your Windows account so that your digital entitlement is paired with your Microsoft account.

2: Make note of your Windows product key, as you will need this when re-activating on the new hardware.

3: When you first boot up with the new bits all installed, Windows 10 won't proactively notify you that you're not activated, right click the start button > System, then proceed to activate Windows.

4: You should have an option to enter the product key, here you can enter your Windows 10 key, or Windows 7 one if you did the free upgrade to 10 from the previous OS.

These are the steps I took and Windows Activation recognised my product key and said I was now activated on the new components.

If it fails, you will see a new button after a couple of attempts to activate using alternative methods, like phone. It's all automated, so just follow the instructions and activate accordingly.

I moved my hard drive to a new system. It installed new drivers. I then installed other drivers from my new motherboard's CD. Windows would not activate so I contacted MS support via live chat and they remote accessed my machine to re-activate once I had shown them an email to prove I had purchased it.
