Basically i have next to no experience with networking, my knowledge stretches as far as plugging in a ethernet or setting up a new route/wireless networks. I have an ethernet running from the router downstairs to my pc in my bedroom. ive picked up an xbox and im wondering, firstly if its possible to connect my xbox from my pc, and secondly how i can do it?

Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

You can do it with a network switch, which basically splits the Ethernet cable into multiple connections so you can plug more than 1 thing into each cable.
Something like this would do the job.

If your PC has 2 ethernet ports then what you can do is have one connected to the router and the other into the xbox. Then all you need to do is set up Internet Connection Sharing on the PC and the Xbox will have full internet access.

This setup requires the PC to be on for the xbox to have connectivity though, if you don't want that then as manbearpig said you should get a switch, plug the router into that and then all other devices into the switch. The switch should just be plug everything in and it will work, so it is the simpler option and allows you to easily add more devices in the future.

you could just use the same ethernet for both your pc and xbox.

all it would take is the energy to unplug from 1 machine and insert it to the other as you desire.

this would then decrease your electricity costs as well as wear and tear on your pc.
