Hello,

Can I network outlook 2007 to say my Work pc upstairs.

Is it just a case of pointing outlook to the same data file.

If it is then what happens when the main PC with the data file is on and a new message comes in and then the other pc is turned on will outlook have any probs.

Cheers

Theres gonna be loads more of these as i'm finally getting round to setting up my work network so i can work on PC downstairs or in my ickle office or from laptop.

I'm only 2yrs behind:D

depending on if your ISP offers IMAP then you could just setup your email on both machines in outlook. I'm not sure what would happen if you had outlook open on both machines at the same time (whether each would update accordingly)

Do you have a PST with IMAP?

Either way, any changes made on one machine should just be updated on the other as it syncs with the server.

I don't think pointing Outlook to a .pst over a network share is supported - I had a hell of a problem trying to get this to work. I ended up just using Googlemail with IMAP.

you can have outlook use a pst on a network share, i've done it before and it worked fine

but as mentioned you can only have it open in one instance of outlook at a time

A quick Google suggests it isn't supported or recommended. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should...

and just because it isn't supported by MS doesn't mean you can't do it,

besides the op asked if you can do it not if it's supported ;)

can't see the problem with doing it tbh

i never once experienced corrupt files and had it set up like this for ages, but...i don't want to be to blame if the op goes ahead and it ends up corrupt so i'll stay out of it now

I have had corrupted users in outlook. Its not a big deal I just need to work out which PC to have it on now then. Do i just copy the PST file in order to back it up and that PST file has all my emails in it.

Again Thanks Folks

Matt

Alternatively install hMailServer on your 'server' machine (your downstairs PC by the sounds of it) and have it pull your emails from your email server via POP3 (extremely easy to set-up).

You can then connect to hMailServer via IMAP on your downstairs PC and upstairs PC (and webmail, and any other PC you like) through outlook (DONT use POP3, it's just as easy to set-up) and you'll have all your emails synced nicely between all machines.

We use hMailServer at work as both our primary and backup email server and it's very good if you don't need the features of exchange.

Thanks I'll look into that. It may just be the ticket

if you just want email then imap is the answer

if you want calendar and contacts synced too, its more complicated

calendar i use google calender sync, which is brilliant

but ive still not found a good way to sync contacts
