Hi,

I bought an VTX3D HD 7870 Black Boost Edition 2GB about 4-5 years ago.

Due to it being old I have only now realised I should be looking into overclocking my parts (just finished the CPU and Memory).

Is my GPU one that I should/can overclock or should I just leave it at stock?

I remember someone saying something to be about it being a Tahiti or something, which means it was better out the box that it states and rivaled some of the more dearer cards at the time.

Thanks

Sorry for quick post back but I watched a few videos on how to use Valley Benchmark and MSI Afterburner, these are my results:

HD7870 STOCK @ 975Mhz (1188mV) and 1500Mhz Memory

Following tests where run with Valley Benchmark on 1920x1080 @ ULTRA
Code:
1000MHz : Score 1551 - Temp 69 - Average 37.1 FPS (Min: 22.5 - Max: 64.8)
1100MHz : Score 1607 - Temp 69 - Average 38.4 FPS (Min: 38.4 - Max: 68.2)
1200MHz : Score 1631 - Temp 70 - Average 39.0 FPS (Min: 23 - Max: 67.9)
1300MHz : BLACK SCREEN ON START OF TEST
1250MHz : BLACK SCREEN ON START OF TEST
1230MHz : BLACK SCREEN ON START OF TEST
1220MHz : Started test but program crashed, PC didn't black screen or freeze though
1210MHz : Score 1714 - Temp 70 - Average 41.0 FPS (Min: 4.8 - Max: 105.6)

So going from these results keeping voltage on stock I can get to 1210MHz safely looking at the results? or should I now increase the voltage and push for more graphics speed?

I would be tempted to keep it at 1200 just incase and see how it goes for you for gaming. My 7950 which is also Tahiti is benchmark stable on 1150 but after long hours of gaming it crashes. 1100 has been rock solid however.

Could be worth overclocking the memory as well, not sure how much headroom you have though.

I have my CPU overclocked to 4.2GHz @ 1.200v, XMP RAM at 1600Mhz and then I put my GPU to 1175MHz @ 1188mV.

It successfully passed Valley benchmark and these where results:

STOCK GPU
Score: 1077
AVG FPS: 25.7
Min-Max: 14-47
Max Temp: 68

1175MHZ@1188mV GPU
Score: 1524
AVG FPS: 36.4
Min-Max: 21.5-72.3
Max Temp: 78

Would you say this is a safe temperature to work with? Seems like a great improvement.

Also just ran Crysis 3 on very high settings (without antialiasing) and it ran at average of 35-40FPS, never really dropped below 30FPS. Max temperature was 75 degree.

It was the part in the campaign with the open field and all the turrets shooting at you so seemed to pass.

Good..

Currently running 8 hour realbench test and so far 2-3 hours in cpu max temp has been 73..

Assuming it passes can I assume this is stable? Even if it fails OCCT within minutes?

Still going strong but why has my min and max spiked really high on cpu package?
