as topic, i want to do this as my daughter has been looking at my emails and as a lot of it is quite private i would prefer her not to be able to open outlook to have a peek

can it be done?

Can't try it here so I have no idea if it will work or not but a google search returned this for me.

To protect your email in Outlook Express with a password:

Select File | Identities | Manage Identities from the menu.
Highlight your identity.
Click Properties.
Make sure Require a password is checked.
Type the desired password under New Password and Confirm New Password.
Click OK.
Click OK again.
Finally, select Close

thanks for your reply

oops sorry its not outlook express, i forgot its just outlook (silly me) does this make a difference?

i am using vista if that makes any difference

Select File | Identities | Manage Identities from the menu.
Highlight your identity.
Click Properties.
Make sure Require a password is checked.
Type the desired password under New Password and Confirm New Password.
Click OK.
Click OK again.
Finally, select Close

He means in the program, not literally select the shortcut mate... ;)

So open outlook then follow instructions, assuming the same applies for Outlook.
