I have my pc plugged into my 40 inch sony hd tv. The tv is old, about 2 years. It has one hdmi and is 1080i not 1080p

Is it possible to upgrade my graphics card and get a blu ray player and plug this into the 1080i tv?

Any help would be great, i assume as its 1080i blu ray wouldnt work?

Thanks

Damo

The difference in quality will only be very noticable if you sit really close. If you sit an average distance away from the TV then it will be fantastic.

Thanks for the input guys. Thing is as its a TV and not a monitor. My tv wont really do good resolutions.

I think from memory it only does resolutions of about 1080 x 960?? on a pc i really cannot remember as im at work....Is this a problem?

Thanks :)

I was trying to play viva pinata on vista and it wont even do 1280 x 1080 i think

Sorry for the vague ness :(

Sounds more like you are restrictied by your current graphics card not the TV. You did say you wanted to upgrade ? What have you now and what do you want ?

I play games on a xbox 360 becuase of live thats it.

I use the pc for films

The graphics card is rubbisg £50 jobby with dual dvi. Dont know anything about it. I will post some specs tommorrow.

i will see what resolutions it will do tom morn and post on here.

I will deffo be getting a new graphics card and obv a blu ray player.

I think the TV is a problem tho to be honest. Could be wrong, and probably are wrong lol

Thanks for the input again. IT IS really appreciated!

Hi there, well the highest my display will go is 1360 x 768 There is no flicker or anything like that. It is weird to look at tho, only because i am used to 1024 x 768

There is one more option on the display which is 1600 x 1200 but that black screens and after 15 seconds it reverts back.

As for GPU its a 8600 gt Nvidia Gforce (msi)

Stream Processors 32
Core Clock (MHz) 540
Shader Clock (MHz) 1180
Memory Clock (MHz) 700
Memory Amount 256MB GDDR3
Memory Interface 128-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) 22.4
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) 8.6

PLEASE dont laugh at the GPU i know its rubbish, but i dont game at all :)

I Think the tv cannot go higher than 1360 x768 (it states in my manual) WXGA 1360 X 768 NO! mention of 1600 x 1200 :)

***I have just watched the start of a film in 1360 x 768 and wow!!! I used to watch my films in 1024 x 768 screen was tiny as had massive black bars. Now on the new settings the film is bigger and better quality. I am well chuffed :)

Hmmm, its got dual dvi output tho. So do you buy an adapter or should my tv have dvi somewhere? I really cannot see my GPU being good for 1080i or 720p lol its really really old!!! lol

I just looked in the manual for the TV and it says Display Resolution is 1366 x 768. So that is obviously my maximum i guess. I am happy with the quality tho. Its over 2 years old :)

Thanks for the replies :

Hrm.. HDMI is slightly better quality then VGA but there's really not that much difference between the two. You can get a DVI -> HDMI converter. ATI cards used to come with them.

The 8600GT really isn't that old. Should still play most games on mid-high settings. It's only a generation old afterall (ignoring the 9xxx rename). If it's working okay for you when using VGA then there's really no need to go spending a load on a new card if it's doing everything you'll use it for atm.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that no GPU card comes with a HDMI output as standard, they all use adapters.

Ok thanks for that. I remember buying the card when it came out it was just a cheapo card to get the pc going was only £50-£80 i remember rightly.

So with my graphics card, i could buy a blu ray player for my pc and i could get an adapter and watch blu ray films in 720p?

Just seems to good to be true to be honest.

And as for the GPU with HDMI LOL! i spent ages looking for a card with HDMI i guess thats why i couldnt find it hehe

You shouldn't even need an adapter. When you connect your TV you should be able to pick 1280x720 resolution on it (720p). As someone said above it's best to play your bluray movies at that resolution if fullHD isn't available.

The HDMI adapter might give slightly better quality but not much.
