I'm thinking of installing a new disk and using my Windows HDD as a backup store (this is where WoW is installed).

Would the game run ok if I shortcut to my old drive?

Would you be installing windows on your new hard drive?

if so I would presume the game wouldnt work as it would install files to the system folders. and as they would be o the Old HDD they wouldnt be read.. Not sure.

Yes it will run, fortunately it's one of the few games that will, I've done it myself. (WoW was installed under XP, installed Vista on a new drive, made the XP drive a slave and it ran perfectly just set up a new shortcut for it)

Cool. Now i know I wont have to reinstall if I get a new HDD..

EDIT One more thing .. What folder/file/files are needed to be backed up that contain my characters/save game etc. I rather not redo the whole thing if something happened to my PC.

I think it's the INTERFACE and WTF folder.
But yeah, wow is one of those games you can just copy/paste the folder onto any machine and it will run :p

hehe, WoW doesn't save your characters on your HDD, but yeah, to keep your interface settings/macros/addons, you need to copy the WTF and interface folders

As my 'special' housemate found out, you can even play wow if its not even on your computer >.>

I had my wow directory shared on the network and he managed to start wow and login and play for a while by running the files from my pc!

Was a bit slow though ;)
