Can i plug my pc into my imac27 inch screen

Well the cinema display is mini display port so you would need some kind of adaptor to change dvi/hdmi to mini display port - not to mention that the resolution of the display is massive, so if you're planning to play games you'll need a beefy card to run at native resolution.

As Delphi mentions, you need to get a graphics card output that is display port. This can be done with an active adapter using the GTX 570 card but it isn't ideal. I would suggest going with a HD 6970 card like this if you can, as it has a mini-DP port as standard on the card - so you just need a simple mini-DP male-male cable.

This review shows how the HD 6970 compares to the GTX 570 in a range of games.

Be very careful which gfx card you buy!

I did this with my PC, at the time I had an 8month old ATI 5850 with a full size display port and it wouldn't work, the iMac would act as if it was going to switch then would just switch back to OSX. After doing some research I found the card wouldn't work and had to go and buy a new 6870 which has the proper minidisplay port and has worked fine since.

I would check some big Mac forums to be sure that the card you're looking at will work.

You will not be able to use a card with dvi out with that screen. DVI is one way where as mini display ports can be used as both input and outputs. The only way you can use dvi with that screen is as an output.

You'd need to get a card with a mini display port to use the screen as a monitor, such as the hd 6970 or even a 6950 2gb would be fine for gaming at that res.

(for info, I use a flashed xfx 6950 with my 27 inch iMac and it works fine)

My 6970 works great with the cinema display so suppose it would work with the imac, bit expensive for just that mind!

You can use a card with DVI out. I am using my 580gtx connected to my 2010 mac 27 inch screen. You will need an adapter though which is very expensive. I am using the Atlona DP400. Considering that card already has a mini display port, it might work.

This sounds like a great way to have the best of both. Shame you can't go for the 27" and slightly lower spec cpu and gpu.

Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel) £918.00
27-inch: 2.7GHz £1399.00

So the extra cost for the iMac over a stand alone 27" screen is £481, which isn't bad at all. I'm basically looking at these options as my student days will be ending in a year or so. Just so nice to have a silent box, might consider a mac mini.

Edit: iMac is cheaper and more powerful than 27" cinema display + mac mini. That's an easy one.

Edit2: Weight difference is expected. I would have thought the iMac would be deeper, not taller.

Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel)
Height: 49.1 cm (19.35 inches)
Width: 65 cm (25.7 inches)
Depth: 20.7 cm (8.15 inches)
Weight: 10.7 kg (23.5 pounds)

27" iMac
Height: 51.7 cm (20.4 inches)
Width: 65.0 cm (25.6 inches)
Depth: 20.7 cm (8.15 inches)
Weight: 13.8 kg (30.5 pounds)

It's an interesting change by apple. I was toying with the idea of a new iMac in the next year, then in 1-2 years from now use it as a secondary screen. I suppose it's inevitable for gpu manufacturers to support thunderbolt? Or is it best to hold off for now. I'm not in any hurry just curious. Seems like current displayport support is pretty good so I can't see why thunderbolt wouldn't be the same.

It works great i got my pc connected to my Imac via mini displayport to mini displayport cable but i use a 6950 2gb so any card with a mini displayport will work

So my 5970 mini display port will not work with the new iMac..,, ffs apple, they ruin my software choice by killing my upgrade path with fcp x and the kill my dreams by changing their hardware!!!

Got a 6970 here, works perfectly with the cinema display except had to install bootcamp drivers and update them to get brightness control.

Really hacked off about that display port issue. Now I have to have 2 monitors sitting on my desk...... Oh well.. Still, can't wait to get the beast.

I ordered 27" i7 @ 3.4, 16gb ram, 256 SSD, Ati 6970 2gb, trackpad. Was toying with getting a fast PC, but as this will be a workhorse only and used only for video editing!! I can abuse my PC with everything else I do...

I thought with the latest ones, the input device also had to support Thunderbolt - this pretty much limits you to certain Apple laptops?
