Hi all, currently using an Ipaq with jacket for GPS, but what with 32CH recievers that dont need a dirct visual line to the sky to work available on ebay for 30 odd squids i was wondering about mounting one under the dash.

Id wire it directly to the car electrics obviously, then have my PDA in a cradle bluetoother to it.

Anyone done this? do 32ch recievers really work without line of sight?

surely someone here has tried

I use my Holux GPSlim236 receiver all over the plate, glovebox, under dash, under passenger seat after being hurled across the car following a sharp turn, etc etc - always works fine.

Yes, it's absolutely brilliant and I cannot fault it. I had a Polstar PBT-111 but was SO impressed with the Holux I bought one after seeing how good it was..

My TomTom one works in the passenger footwell, not too sure how its meant to see satellites from down there but it works :o

if you have a bluetooth enabled PDA then a bluetooth gps receiverworks fine

I have an ipaq rx3715 and bought the same gps receiver as the guys above

works fine from the glovebox or from my sunglasses storage box on top of the dash..

I bought the tom tom 5.21 software from ebay as well

So all I'd need is:

PDA with B/T capabilities.
GPS Reciever
TomTom software?

I also upgraded mind from a Polstar, and it is much better.

Once thing I have noticed though, is that sometimes I will turn it on and it will not get signal for love nor money. Yet if I leave it with the battery out for ~5 mins it picks it up within about a minute?

Mine might be a dodgy unit, but 90% of the time it's fine. Bargain for ~£40 from the bay too.
