Can I put an app from another iTunes account on my iPad?

Tried Googling for this but there's loads of seemingly conflicting info about.

My iPad is happily synced to my iTunes account but I'm wondering if there's any way I can install and use an app from another iTunes account without wiping everything currently on there?

I suspect not but I thought I'd ask.

No, you can only install apps you have on your account to an iPad that is synced with your account, unless you jailbreak, but after jailbreaking anything else I told you about getting free apps would be illegal.

The only way to the app on your iPad is to sync with the other account, in which case you'd lose everything else, or to re-download it to your account, thus paying for it again

That's not true at all - log in with the other iTunes account and you will be able to download it. You'll need to put the other account's password in when you update it, but it'll work fine.

This is true, that you can log into another account and just download it. When the app wants to update it will just ask you for the password associated with the account what was used to download the application in the first place.

Ah ok, so can I just login to a different iTunes account on the iPad directly via the iTunes app and download it that way without risking screwing things up? Once downloaded can I revert the login details back to my own account?

Yes. However when you try and install a future update, it will ask you for the other iTunes credentials.

Ok thanks.

Just tried it. Whilst the purchased app appears OK when logged in via the other account (i.e. it says Install rather than purchase), when I try to install it, it wants me to confirm my payment info from the card registered to the other account.

This isn't a problem, I'm just concerned that it's going to charge the account again for the app rather than just wanting confirmation of the details? :/

Also, if this is as easy as it seems, doesn't this make it possible to 'share' an app across multiple iPads, even though it's only been purchased once? Doesn't sound like something Apple would make that easy?

You usually do have to confirm payment details when you start using your iTunes account on a different device that it hasn't yet been used with (it's certainly asked me to verify this information a couple of times, usually it asks for the card security code).

Apple make sharing iTunes purchases quite easy, especially if the accounts in question are all located on the same home network. All you need to do is turn on 'Home Sharing' and you can copy purchases freely amongst everyone on the same home sharing network, even if you have different iTunes accounts. As above, the same caveat applies in that if an app has an update, it will need to be authorised by the account that was originally used to purchase that app.
