Can I "rent a desktop"

I was wondering if there was anywhere that I could rent an online computer and access it remotely from any PC?

I want to install XP or 7 ideally, it doesn't need to be powerful or anything, just be able to run the basics.

Does such a thing exist?

Amazon's EC2, irc it doesnt offer desktop os's though.

Windows VPS (or dedicated server if you have more money to play with) with remote desktop, VNC or similiar will do this but performance will depend a lot on the link speed you have to it (don't expect to be watching videos from it unless you have FTTC or similiar and so on).

surely it be cheaper in the long run to get an old machine and set it up for RDP from the outside world? Like you said it doesn't need to be powerful, just grab an old laptop, install windows xp/7, setup RDP, port forwarding on your router, and dynamic dns.
