Can I root and flash customs ROM's onto a contract phone?

Will their be any difficulties with doing so? I mainly want to root, so I can do more stuff with android, but I might install customs roms in the future.

What phone, there is no implications while in contract other than warranty.

In the UK you should have no problems at all rooting and flashing. Mobile networks over here don't really care what you do with your phone as long as you keep paying your bills. The only snag is that rooting invalidates your warranty, but that's the same on SIM free phones anyway. If you have any problems, just flash back to stock.

In the US, the situation is a bit more complicated as carriers like Verizon love to secure bootloaders like Fort Knox, which makes life a lot more difficult.

No worries, I have had a great contract and SIM free Android phones and all of them have been rooted and flashed at some point. Just remember the warranty point and you'll be fine!
