I am was in the process of creating a NAS using a Raspberry Pi B3+ a Western Digital Passport 4Tb HDD, so that my Home Theatre set up including my Rock-chip x99 Android Box (which at £115 was NOT cheap for what it is) can access the 4Tb drive ...that was until the 4TB Passport WD drive stopped working almost instantly, and is now 'just' outside the 28 day return policy and the returns to WD direct are more costly than the drive - why not return it instantly I here you say, well in experience it seemed to work at first, on off for a bit, then I never used it for few weeks due to family issues then started not been seen by OS (WIN10), as I say I had personal family issues that didn't allow me to chase this up as fast as i would have liked, its dead completely now, no spin up or power light.

Before I put the Pi together (and replace the drive) etc, I thought I would test this X99 by sharing the downloads folder on windows, the furthest ive gotten is the X99 asking for user name and password to access my PC which I dont use on windows.

anyone had ant experience with this?

thanks

You would be better off using something like Plex to share media throughout your network. The Pi could definitely do that - but wont have enough power to transcode media so it's important that your devices can directly stream the media.

have you tried stripping the drive out of it, on the chance it's just the drive controller that died?

also, regarding not using a password on windows - set up another user with rights only to the folders you want to share, and then use these credentials to connect.
