Can I unlock 60FPS in my games?

Behind you... Naked!
This must have been asked, but can I?

Im just looking at some games I am playing for a giggle, and I have noticed that no matter what PC, what CPU, how much RAM or what GFX Card I have, the game always seems to play at a flat 60FPS, occasionally dropping when its loading junk or whatever, but the games themselves are pretty much staying flat at 60.

Sure, many are coded this way, but WTF?

I dont play many super high end games anmore, since I lost the ability to use one hand properly, and so, I am seriously thinking that I am wasting my time in buying any half decent cards, but, like a fool I keep on buying them.

The thing is, that 2 of my more recent builds are on pretty much the opposite ends of the scale when it comes to PC Specs, and yet they play all my games in absolutely exactly the same way and I just cannot notice a single bit of difference?

One is my Skylake, 32GB, uber sexy beast, that ruined me for over a grand ananarf, the other I knocked up with bits from the MM and its an ITX AMD that in total cost me well under 200 notes I am sure... Certainly only about ton for the Mobo & CPU, 20 for the case and the rest I already have in bits.

So, why do I bother to upgrade? I get ZERO benefits other than the missus screaming at me cos we havbe more PCs in our house that a box of rice crispies has... well... rice I suppose?

If I could unlock that limit, then I would see that one is maybe struggling to get above that 60 while the other may ce in the hundreds, but right now, all I see is more money down the drain.

Sure, I am having a whine, but I would like to also know if I could do it too!

Depends what resolution you play at of course but maintaining 60fps with anything above 1080p will not be do-able in some games.

I don't see why you would want more than 60fps really anyway. All you doing is using more GPU power for the sake of it. Some say its better to have more than 60fps in fast online fps but its actually fine once you get used to it and I actually play better because its not jumping from 60fps one minute to 170fps the next (also less heat, power and fan noise)

There's no benefit to running over 60fps on a 60 hz monitor. V sync does introduce input lag though.

Time for a new 1440p high refresh rate monitor with free/g sync. And maybe a box of rice crispies to keep the missus happy!

You bought a top end PC in order to play older, less demanding games? You have nobody to get upset at except yourself in this situation as a little bit of research would have told you it would largely be overkill.

So yea, if you dont care to play modern, demanding games and are already pumping out 1080p/60fps in every game you play, there's not much need to upgrade, no.

That said, you could definitely upgrade your monitor to make better use of your system. Turning off V-sync with a 60hz monitor will get you higher than 60fps in games, but there will be no visual benefit, only a tiny increase in input responsiveness. But instead, get a 120/144hz monitor. Doesn't have to be a 1440p super expensive one, but a simple BenQ 1080p/144hz monitor or something. Your general desktop experience will feel a lot smoother and if you're playing less demanding games, you'll be able to run many of them at 90fps, 120fps or even a full 144fps. Keep in mind not all games support going over 60fps, but I'd say a majority do. This seems like your best option if you want to get some additional benefit from your system without spending much more money.

Other than that, I dont know what to tell you. Try out some more demanding games maybe. There's some stuff that isn't exactly mechanically complex that can still push your system.

It might help to know what sort of games you can/do play, or what level your disability hampers you specifically. Might be able to give you some recommendations.

EDIT: Oh yea, one thing you can do with the extra GPU power you've got spare using your existing monitor - use Nvidia's DSR to downsample. This isn't going to be world changing, but you could probably get some nice bonuses to image quality using it. I can explain more if you want(not trying to be patronizing, some people dont know what DSR or downsampling is or how to do it).

I would rather a little input lag over screen tearing especially when the main culprit of lag will be your internet connection.

Vsync input lag can be almost 100% reduced by using a fps limiter and set it to 1 below the refresh rate your running so for 60hz set it to 59.

Thanks for the inputs everyone.

Me wanting to do over 60FPS is PURELY to see what the difference is between certain cards. no other reason. 60FPS is a smooth as silk gameplay and I am very very happy with it, but I simply wanted to know how much more that card X would be capable of, over card Y. Nothing more in it than that I will be honest.

No no... I bought a top end PC for many things, gaming is just one, and if you think for one second that I have ever been upset with any of my builds, you are mistaken. I have loved every minute of knocking them up, no matter what they have been built for.

In a similar vein, I love playing all kinds of games. My favourites are COD and UnReal Tournament and I would love to blow my trumpet a little here, but I was bloody good at it. I hate all driving games, however I have started to try to force myself into playing them and I have bought a couple of wheels and pedals and I am kind of liking DIRT, Dirt Rally, Grid and so on, but only to a point, and I have got into those Trials Evolution and Fusion.
Oh and I love playing Snooker and pool.. Again games that only need me to use the mouse.

My disability is that my fingers and thumb simply dont react properly so I can press one key at a time, but my other hand can use the mouse fairly well.

Annoyingly, as I am left handed and its my left hand thats ruined and so moving the mouse feels unnatural in my right hand.

It great having a PC that is over kill for playing some older less demanding games..
As many times I have gone back to playing some my older games with 16x AA or 32x AA with all maxed out graphic settings at really great FPS compared to the crappy FPS I got when the game was released (Yes am looking at you crysis as being one of them games :D)

It always better to have a PC with to much power then it is to have a PC with not enough power...;)

UnReal Tournament was almost definitely the big one for me.
Quake and Doom of course but UT was the serious one as I played that to death against my good mate Ali.

He had a P200MMX and I had a Celeron 333 at the time. He then bought himself a Voodoo 1 and shortly after I got mine too!

Those were seriously great times, and I love going back to play those very same levels... Playing at 640x480 and then going to a Massive 800x600 was a huge deal back then... And of course moving from Software to Hardware Direct3D or OpenGL ( OGL being vastly superior IMHO ) - Ah those were the days for sure!
But yes, now I can play those games at silly resolutions, and at teh same time defrag all my drives and burn 3 DVDs AND convert a dozen youtube videos from my camera into AVI or whatever, and hell, go through my entire TV Library converting those from VOB to MKV at the same time and the game does not flicker a single jot... Things have certainly changed a bit.

How would this reduce/remove input lag? I just run vsync on with a 60hz monitor and it seems fine
Wouldnt setting 59fps max just mean you are down on a frame?
