My parents can be funny when it comes to technology, they know I always go out of my way to make sure the people in my life will get the best for their money and inform to the hilt before purchases. This never stops them from impulse buying.. Latest addition, half a grand on a semi- future proof TV.

The model they bought : Panasonic - TX - L42E3B

I'm looking for a way to play some of my Blue Ray rips when I stay over there (they don't have a player!) Which I have in MKV format.

The TV itself has no USB and only an SD slot which says media capability but from what I gather, no XVID or MKV play support.

Is there a way to flash the TVs firmware (I've seen this on other models) so that it will play more than bog standard file formats or do I need to convert my stuff before I visit them.

If there is no mod option, what is the cheapest option as far as a Media Player with "Smart" capability, something with space for a hard drive, a remote to use, good coverage of media types (pref including MKV) 1080p support and some basic web such as youtube and such.

Just buy them a decent, multi-function Blu-Ray player, IMO.

Or buy yourself one and cart it round there every time you want to hog their telly :)

I was hoping there would be a solution to my parents wanton wasting of funds that didn't require throwing more cash at it. Oh well :/

This would also require me to cart my blue rays round there when I go, got tonnes of flash media :/ My disk wallets were redundant so I tossed em. Can't remember the last time I traveled with disks :O Gotta be 8+ years.

Just got a WD TV Live myself - it's brilliant! Plays everything I throw at it.

It's got USB on it so you could use an external HDD (not sure what file systems it reads though) but I believe there is a version with a HDD inside as well.
