Hiya,

I dismantled my dads laptop earlier to find out some information,

It is a Packard Bell iGO 4000 Series (4451 to be exact).

It has a 20gb hard drive, which is fine, and the chipset is a

SiS650 North Bridge with SiS961 South Bridge.

The CPU is a Intel Mobile Celeron 1.5 GHz

It can only take a max of 384MB of ram, currently using 128 standard built in RAM, and a 128MB chip, so I could take that out and add a 256mb instead = 384mb.

But the CPU I would like to upgrade, as im sure that would be the most noticeable...

How do I know which CPU I can use? Can I use a Pentium-M? Or a Celeron-D

The processor looks smaller than a normal desktop PC one...

Most likely you cannot. The socket form factor will tell you what, for the most part, will fit inside. It is likely that it came with a skt479 CPU which is what you'd need for a PM. If the socket is different, you are out of luck. Even if a faster CPU will fit, the cooling on laptops is usually just barely good enough for the factory installed CPU. Putting a high powered CPU in it would probably be a poor idea.

If you can find a faster CPU with the same TDP as the one thats currently in your laptop it shouldn't be any problem changing it out for a faster one. Especially if thats a Socket 479 Celeron M, you should be able to swap that out for a nice Dothan and have an excellent speed bump. Make sure you use AS5 to maximise heat transfer and you should be fine.
