can i upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8.1

As the questions says i am a noob and just wanted to know if i can download 8.1 from the Microsoft website if i have window 7? Or if not, why cant i just download a cracked version of window 8 and then just download window 8.1 going from an illegal copy to legal copy

would it work? Thanks for the help!

Wait till it launches to see what options you have available. 8.1 is a free update to 8.0, so there isn't much stopping you upgrading to 8.0 right now legitimately and just wait for the upgrade.

Using illegal copies is not exactly your safest best. Considering the 8.1 Preview ISO's are available for download from here, the chances of it being available stand-alone are very high!

But as theheyes said above, nothing stopping you from using 8.0 then update to 8.1 upon release.
