Hi there , for some reason my Internet don't seem as fast now ive switched from bt home hub to sky!. I think it's because my pc is 300mbps and the router is on 53mbps? Can I buy a better quality router which will increase speed and give me a better signal? Thanks

The quick answer is no,
Its within the T&C's of sky that you must use there router,
But there is folks out there using non sky routers,

The downside to this is:
1 they have the router to block the connection
2 they do not have to support you with any issues you might have

What you could do it get another router and link the 2 of them but again sky will not help if you face any issues.

To be honest that's a bit of a harsh response.

I have been with Sky for a long time and have never used their router... in fact a few times sky support have asked me to use another router to test if their supplied one was broke...

it does say you must use their router in the T&C's but that hardly ever enforced unless you want technical support then you must have their router to test with as they will not diagnose anything without it..

OP the one thing to bear in mind if you do get your own router is that Sky will not supply you with the username and password to be able to make a connection on a 3rd party router... its pretty easy to extract those details from the sky router you have and google is your friend..

to be fair the wireless on the SKY routers is not the best.... my netgear dgn3500 im currently using on sky gives my a stable 17meg connection where the sky router will only give me 15meg..

You can use your own router, i have been for over 2 years, and iv even told the tech guys when i ring that i do, they don't care.

Now that being said, if you need tech support, u will have to plug in the sky router, that is the only way they will help you. After u have recived help then switch back to the router u want, its how i do it.

Take a look at skyuser forum for more info.

I was thinking of adding a wireless n access point to my sky router, would that do the same thing without breaching there T&C's?
I have the dlink sky router and connection is stable and fast, just the wireless is a bit pants

Yeh using a 2nd router for the wireless is totally fine, lots of info on how to do that and so on, on skyuser forum.
