Can I upgrade Xubuntu directly from 8.04 to 9.04?

Shouldn't be a problem. Just update your sources.list and off you go.

Do you even have to edit sources.list any more? I've not used an apt based distro (or any linux for that matter) in ages.

yes as far as i know.

from memory without looking, in synaptics package manger, click on setting, then select the option thta upgrades every version. The upgrade should then come up in package manger,

8.10 is an upgrade and stable. .4 are just LTS (Long Term Support)

Thanks, I enabled normal versions under software sources, and the 8,10 update now shows up, I just did it the long way in the end, 8.04 > 8.10 > 9.04.

LTS version are not every *.04, they are currently released on a two year schedule. 8.04 was an lts, and 10.04 will be too. 9.04 (jaunty) was not an lts.
All ubuntu releases are considered stable, there are no testing releases.
