Bit of a noob when it comes to consoles, last one I had was a SuperNES. Bought a 360 yesterday though, it's a 4GB elite slim. I have a 320GB 2.5" SATA2 drive lying around that I fetched out of a laptop. Can I used this as a hard drive for the 360 instead of paying through the nose for the official microsoft one?

If this question has already been asked (I suspect it has) can someone point me in the direction of the relevant thread because I couldn't find it.

To avoid getting a permanent console ban from Xlive its not a good idea to tamper with the 360 MS can detect the HD digital signature & ban it via the network address which means it becomes virtually worthless!! Especially avoid people selling 2nd hand much cheaper as they are usually a modded drive which is why they are so cheap.

Just man up & buy the 250GB HD online it can be had for around £70 if you look around. If money is tight buy or use an existing USB flash drive think it supports up to 16GB which will let you install 2/3 games from DVD to HD.

Serious?

You honestly think MS would ban someone for swapping the HDD?
If you use a modded HD yes they do its happened to people who bought a cheap HD then modded the firmware & went online. MS can detect any changes/firmware & apparently modding the HD digital signature to make it think its the one which came with the console originally is a console ban offence! Only safe way around this is to use the console offline. They even banned users who modded their 60/120Gb HD's onto a 360 slim!!!

This is an older article its not possible to link to anything newer on here but google it there are plenty of articles on the subject! This is why its not worth taking the chance!

Modding the firmware is not the same as just swapping your 120Gb hard drive from an elite to work in a 4Gb Slim console.

I'd be very surprised if they were banned for this reason alone, and there were not other things going on with the accounts that swapped hard drives.

If you only just bought the 4gb Xbox and you're already wanting a HDD then maybe it wasn't the right one to buy. Pretty much always somewhere selling the 250gb slim for £159.

Absolute rubbish, no bans have been given out for using unofficial drives, it's all rumour and conjecture. I personally have been using a unofficial 'hacked' 120gb drive for nearly two years, that console still has no ban, as have plenty of people I know.

Also, that article is talking about the HDD being disabled in consoles that were banned for modified DVD firmware, nothing to do with them handing out bans for using unofficial HDDs.
