Hi,

Just a quick one... just did a tyre check for my new car (mk4 2008 Mondeo) and Ford's stipulation is 215/55R16 V93

My old car (mk3 2001 Mondeo) has 4 virtually brand new tyres which are 205/55/R16 V91

Would my old car's tyres be compatible with my new car? Unsure whether to keep them or not...

The Dealer has put four brand new Sunew YS112 on which I've since found out are a bag of **** and my old tyres are four virtually brand new Conti Eco Contact Premium 5s...

thanks guys,

I can just swap the wheels over myself jacking the cars up? Don't have to take them to a pro to get balanced or something again?

I don't know what to do now - my old car is advertised for sale with 12 watchers and a starting price of £250. Don't know whether to let the car sell and buy brand new 215 tyres with the money or just take the wheels off and stick them on my new car. Having just bought my new car it doesn't quite seem right to alter against Ford's recommendations iyswim.

If you really can be bothered, swap the tyres but not the rims.
You've got to question if it's worth the effort though.

What are the tyres on your old car?

Conti Eco Contact Premium 5s bought in March so decent tread and condition left on them.

They're Eco Contact. I'm still unsure what to do, it won't damage my car in any way running the smaller tyres will it, or look hideously daft?

I seem to recall the Conti EcoContact tyres being fairly average, from having them on previous cars - they're harder compound eco tyres after all. I'd argue if it was worth the effort in all honesty.

Well in that case I could just let the auction run on my old car with the Conti's on. There's only 7 hours left with a £250 starting price and 12 watchers, the proceeds, if any, could be used towards getting some new tyres and I guess I could just drive like a Granny until then.

Would there be any problems swapping the tyres over and running the Conti's on the Mk4's rims?

Just phoned the dealer knowing it'd be a waste of time anyway, was just curious to see what they'd say about them. As expected "well they conform to British standard, I don't see the point in premium tyres or spending hundreds of pounds on them I think they're the biggest rip off going"...

Proceeded to tell him about what car's test where the Sunew's took 86 metres to stop in the wet from 70mph whereas the Goodyear's took 56 metres.

*Silence*

So the dealer won't budge, gonna give my local tyre place a call now.

Just spoke to my local tyre place and the bloke there says I can't change the wheels over as it would change the speedo - which we already know, then he said it'd wear the drive shaft out as well.

Any truth in that?

Yeah that's what they're saying, but another guy from ATS just said it might change the ABS but other than that there aren't any problems in doing it - they don't do it themselves anymore after they had problems doing it with a guys Golf or something.

Kwik fit have quoted me £80 to swap the tyres onto the new rims but he advised that he wouldn't personally do it.

The only problem I have with swapping the wheels over is that the dealership (they have a bodyshop) did a great job painting the wheels on my new car so they're nice and shiny black whereas on my old car the wheels look no where near as good. I know I'd have trims on but to the keen eye as you'll all know you can see wheel behind even if you're not really focusing on it.

A mk4 Mondeo might just look a bit funny with mk3 wheels.

This is why I'd be better off putting the Conti's on my mk4 rims then I guess, that, and as said above the wheels have been painted to look much better.
