Can I use a normal ATX PSU with my Shuttle?

Hi, I'm planning to upgrade my graphics card to something like an AGP Radeon X800Pro or GTO for my Shuttle SN45G. I only have the stock 200W PSU in there which handles my XP-M [email protected], 1GB PC 3200 DDR RAM, one DVD-RW and one hard drive, plus a Radeon 9700Pro fine.

However, I doubt it would handle the graphics card I'm planning to get. I'm wondering, is it fine to use a normal ATX PSU instead and plug everything into that? I'm not asking whether I can cram it into my Shuttle if that's what you're think, lol. I don't use the case anymore with my Shuttle and place all sorts of things like fans on or around my case. Any opinions please?
 
I'm fairly sure you can with that model Shuttle. It has a standard ATX motherboard connector. You will prop need ATX not ATX2... i.e the lesser number of pins

The issue comes with the larger Shuttles... the SN25 / SN26 etc becuase the motherboad connections are totally non standard.
 
if you do, you'll have to run it outside but trust me on this, you wont need it if your 200watt psu is an achme one (having said that, the enhance ones may be good enough too).

i was running my SN85G4V3 on a 200watt psu a month or 2 ago fine with it fully loaded up with HDD's, X800pro VIVO oc'd to XT PE etc happily.

as Steeps said in another thread, if it fits in a shuttle then the psu will power it :) shuttle PSU's are very high quality, so even though they have a low power rating, are good enough to run everything you can throw at them

at the very least if you were still worried you could upgrade the psu to one of them 250watt or 300watt silent X psu's, they will definatly power it all with no problem.
 
those types of psu's are massive by comparrison to a shuttles. the only thing id be a little worried is that the amount of current it tryes to push throught the tiny shuttle motherboard.
 
it be reet :) the shuttle psu's are literally the same thing, just less wattage. the higher the wattage, the more stable things become (unless its a q-teq, where the higher the wattage,t he more likley it is to explode)

if you can get nice stable rails, id say anywhere between 11.3v and 12+v then it should be fine
 
if you really want to run it off an external atx psu, it does run fine (if not more stable actually, got a better clock from an external) had an akasa 460w running whilst i was hacking up the psu.
