Can I use a Raspberry Pi 2 as a media server?

I currently transfer my video files from my PC then onto a USB stick then plug that into my TV. It's not the most convenient way of doing things as I'm constantly plugging and unplugging the USB stick.
I have an old Raspberry Pi 2, can I set this up so I can download files straight on to this and use it as a server to access it from my smart TV's or Firesticks?

Depends. if you're using something like Plex and it's not transcoding on the server then it should be okay.
