hi guys

im kind of stumped with this , my sky router use to be centre of large flat but problems with cabling and this and that has meant i have now had to move the router back to next to the socket . the wireless range basically is pants especially the 5ghz .

i purchased the tp link archer vr600 as a replacement for the sky hub which works fine but in all honesty its wifi range is not that much better . so i have plugged the sky q hub back in .

i have 2 powerline adapter in use also and have a thrid spare the 2 run to xbox ones for a better connection .

my question is can i use the 3rd spare adapter and its ethernet to attach the archer vr600 in a central location to give the flat full coverage of both 2.4 and 5ghz wireless only.

i dont want this to cause issues though with double nats and stuff on the xboxs :)

Yes you should be able to set the vr600 in Wireless AP mode which disables DHCP etc and use it in the location you want. No double NAT's at play as the vr600 simply becomes a WAP and doesn't route any traffic.

cool

so do i just plug the ethernet cable from the powerline into the wan/lan port and enable wireless router mode on archer

i have my 2.4 ghz and 5ghz split on sky hub and named different should i also do this with the vr600 but rename them the same and use same passwords as the sky ?

many thanks for replying

No mention of the VR600 having a selectable AP mode.

You can still configure it manually. Google 'configure router as access point' and you'll find plenty of guides. TP-Link even has a video about it on their support page for the VR600.

thanks

im wondering if it would be easier to just buy a ready to go access point but i want one that will do 2.4 and 5ghz as i still have a couple of old devices that would need to connect but my budget is not a lot

any recommendations ?

As you already have the VR600 I'd use it. The configuration required isn't difficult.

lol ok for a techie i suppose but ill give it a go so am i right in thinking by doing a bit of reading and trying this but running into problems :(

this is my sky router

lan tcp/ip setup 192.168.0.1

use router as dhcp server
starting ip address 192.168.0.2
ending ip address 192.168.0.254

so on my archer v600 i need to set its ip as outside the starting and ending range my archer though is 192.168.1.1 would i need to change it ?

i managed to follow the guide and set it up plugged in powerline to lan port on archer and connected to wireless

the problem is i cant log into the archer now via web page to alter any settings like wifi password or anything so i am sure i am doing something wrong

i think its to do with this ip thing

i also use a homeplug so i wonder if that got a number also that conflicts :(

DHCP on the VR600 needs to be disabled.

It needs a management IP in the address range the Sky router is using (i.e. 192.168.0.n). You'll need to adjust the DHCP range on the Sky router to leave some addresses available.

The two routers need to be connected LAN-to-LAN. If the VR600 has an Ethernet WAN port then ignore it.

Powerline adapters don't have IP addresses (unless they have built-in wireless).

and im not sure what you mean about adjusting the dhcp range on the sky router or what to adjust it to .

do i not have to put the sky router ip 192.168.0.1 anywhere in the archer settings ?

does the management ip address you are on about mean change the ip address of the archer in the lan set up section

really sorry to bother you and i do appriciate your time helping me , im afraid im more a build them kind of techie and am lost where the networking side comes into it

Don't worry about changing the DHCP address range. Set the VR600 to 192.168.0.251. This is the address you'll then use to access its admin pages. It doesn't need to know anything about the IP address of the Sky router.

An alternative is to leave the VR600 on 192.168.1.1 and change the IP of your PC on the occasions you need to access it. Change the IPv4 address of the PC from automatic to 192.168.1.100 (mask of 255.255.255.0 and the gateway can be blank). When you're done change it back to automatic.

ok so ive follwed your steps in step 1 and changed the vr600 to 192.168.0.251 and turned off dhcp and then rebooted it . it still comes back as site unreachable when i try and log into the router via that ip ....... i dont need to have the network cable plugged in do ? i am just using ethernet cable from archer to pc just to try and log into it ......

ive done a quick video on yt to show you settings maybe u can spot something ive missed :( this is driving me totally maaaaad lol

With DHCP disabled it won't be issuing IP addresses so the connected PC won't have a valid address unless you set it manually.

Connect the two routers together (LAN-to-LAN) and connect the PC to either of them. The Sky router's DHCP server will then be available.

If you still can't access it try rebootiog the PC.

If you're still stuck I'll have a look at that video once I've finished the programming I'm supposed to be getting finished.
