Can I use an game pad on steam games?

Have been given a game pad by my wife as a gift, random I know, I think she meant to get me an old fashioned joy stick but got confused anyhow, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, can I use it on steam games? I've never owned a console so this will be a new experience.

Yes I use my PS3 controller on Steam games like Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim and have tested it on Super Meat Boy. It'll be fine

Yeah, a lot of games do have support with game pads.

What kind of controller it is?

If a game has this or just 'Controller Support' on the Steam store page it means the game will natively support a controller for gameplay.
