Looking at the service manual found HERE, and the AMD Athlon X2 processor family tree found HERE, I would say yes if they are both socket AM2. If the dell is socket 939 then look for an Athlon64 x2 (90nm) off the bay it will be a significant improvement. Look at the family tree it will tell you what too look for.

You will have to be careful if you can use the x2 (65nm) cpu, a bois update will likely be necessary and even then voltage issues might be a problem.

From the looks of this maybe. However, I would imagine you need to update the BIOS for it to work. Bare in mind the Sempron 3100+ uses socket 754 and the Athlon 64 X2 5600+ uses socket AM2. So even then I'm not sure if a simple BIOS update will work as you can get socket 939 versions of the Athlon 64 X2.

The main thing about CPU compatibility is not the die structure, but the socket and if the BIOS supports it.

HI RobTi, The above is correct about the socket 754 Sempron, your board wont be AM2, but it will take the x2 939 (90nm). It's the Manila sempron that is AM2.

There is only a 7% performance hit between the 939 and the AM2 equivalents, Sorce. It looks to me that the 4800+ would be the best you could get for that dell, and it would make a great upgrade. You would be looking at 25-40 pound for the cpu, not cheap considering.
