Hi all, I've had my trusty old system for over 4 years now & it has served me well, but I'm going to upgrade to a Core i5 system. As far as power leads go the layout of the mobo looks the same except this mobo has a 8 pin ATX_12V_2X4. My PSU doesnt have this but does have 2 ATX 12V( 4 pin each ) do you think I'd be able to use these 2 - 4 pin connectors in the 8 pin one or could I buy an adaptor.

My PSU is a tagan 480W G the motherboard is a gigabyte - GA-P55-UD3, I'm not deffo set on this board I'm just using this as an example.

All the connectors from my PSU are :

2 PCI -x - 6 pin
about 4 sata power leads.
a number of 4 pin round hole connectors - are they called molex connectors, not sure ?
2x ATX 12 V ( 4 pin )
ATX 12 V EPS 12 V - 24 pin connector ( it's actually a 20 & 4 pin that connect together to make a 24 pin connector )

Thanks in advance for any help.

yes you should be ok but not 100% sure but even if you are im not sure its best to risk a old PSU with all the new parts cos if your old PSU is not 100% condition & it goes with the stain of running the i5 it might take the board & cpu with it

you can pick up a new 600watt modular power supply for £65. I would say your build will work but i would advise a new powersupply. Use it till you get the money for a new one.

Power supplies age. You won't get the full rated output from it after 4 years. While it's perfectly possible to use the two 4-pin connectors to connect to the 8-pin socket, I think you'd probably be better off getting a new PSU anyway.
