Can I use my old Pioneer VSX-LX70 Amp with 4K TV?

Hi all,

I have an old Pioneer VSX-LX70 which was pretty premium back in it's day.

I am contemplating making the jump to 4K and like the look of the Samsung QLED screens (Or should I wait for OLED?).

I only have space for a 43" and nothing from LG is that small.

Anyway in a nutshell, can I still get picture from a 4K blu ray player? Or would I go picture into TV and then sound out of TV into amp?

Any help is much appreciated!

If your AVR is not 4K, then you'll have to output 1080p from the BD player, and it'll downscale then upscale. Which is bad.
One option is to go from BD player to TV directly, and just use optical/coaxial out. But then you'll lose HD audio.
Or if your your TV supports ARC, go BD->TV->AVR. I'm not sure TV's HDMI can pass through audio untouched though, and DD/DTS/HD audio works. I'd try this first.

The LX70 can't pass 4K (it's about 10 years old so unsurprising), I can't even find if it does ARC for audio return but I haven't really had enough time to fully peruse the online manuals I can find, although ARC is not an ideal solution as it is limited to plain Dolby Digital and DTS with none of the HD audio varieties as it only has the same bandwidth as and optical/coax connection.

To be honest if you're moving to a 4K setup I would look at replacing the Amp as well to get the benefits of the technology improvements since yours first existed.
