Im a complete numpty when it comes to tv technicals and happily confess i know absolutely nothing about it at all.

We have got rid of sky and it goes off on 9th September. We are going to freeview and our tv has a digital freeview built in. Can i utilise the sky dish cable and just plug that into the tv for the freeview or do i need to buy all new cabling? Also, Can the satellite dish pick up BBC, ITV, Freeview etc or do i need a new aerial?

just leave your sky box set up and you can watch all the channels on that.

or you can buy a card from sky that let's you use your sky dish and box to watch even more channels.

the card will cost you a one of payment of £20.

You'll need a freesat box not Freeview

They cost about the same as freeview boxes.

sorry didn't read the thread you the dish probably wouldn't pick up and channels as you need a certain voltage to the LNB to get it to work. Only satellite boxes supply this voltage.

i cancelled sky and still have my 2 box's hooked up to watch normal channel's and a few other's.

im just about to buy the card from sky to watch freesat channel's.

If im understanding this correctly then you are saying that i can utilise the dish with all its cabling but the freeview built into the telly wont work and i will need a "freesat" box?

Yes freeview uses your normal aerial whilst freesat uses your dish. Do you still have a standard aerial? If so just use that.

If you live in a good reception area you can even buy a small indoor aerial.

sorry to bump an old thread but i used the search option and found this, im thinking of canceling sky but my new home does not have an outside aerial just the sky dish

so judging from this thread i have two options:

cancel sky subscription and then buy a "freesat" card from them

cancel sky subscription then buy a dedicated freesat box, which then uses my existing skydish as an aerial ?

with the first option will i get ALL of the freesat channels on the sky box ? because ive used a skybox as a "freeview" box a few years ago and some of the freeview channels where locked not all but some

and a freesat box definately uses the sky dish as an aerial ?

yes i know what the sat stands for ;)

But i didnt know if there was a seperate/different dish for that particular service

Ok so you have

1. Freeview , uses a standard aerial
2. Sky Freesat , needs a satellite + a sky box with a freesat card from sky
3. Freesat , needs a satellite + either a freesat box (no card needed) or a freesat card for PC

2 and 3 both use the SAME SATELLITE to transmit from , so a sky dish will do either , depending on what you have attached to it.
