**ANSWERED**

Afternoon all,

Having just discovered that the TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 I've had in my OcUK basket for the past week has just sold out (with a reported waiting time of at least a few weeks), I thought I'd turn to my old laptop's RAM just in the meantime whilst the good stuff arrives.

The old school RAM be this (from a 5/6 year old HP entertainment laptop):

The most important (I assume) labels say:

CT: RAMHK7FS1XQ1TF
2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-666-12-E3
M470T5663EH3-CF7 0925

It's for this build here

With this motherboard: Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Your knowledge would be much appreciated on this one, as I have no clue whatsoever how I might go about deciphering the labels on this RAM and translating it into some meaningful jargon to see if it is compatible with this motherboard.

If it is not, any suggestions as to replacements for the Team Orange RAM would be much appreciated. I do not wish to wait for 'a few weeks' to finish this build, given I have almost all the necessary parts to complete it. Lesson learned on waiting too long...

Many thanks,
Hugh

Nope, the ram in the pic is older laptop ddr2 ram which wont physically fit in the new Z87 board.

Damn. Predictable, but worth a shot. Thank you for the firm and very rapid answer.

Would something like the TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit be a worthy replacement for the TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit?

I can't actually see any spec difference other than the colour and the price of around £15 more for the RED, but I am likely missing something.

Both are the exact same kit, just different coloured heatspreaders. The difference in price is more than likely that ocuk had the orange kit on special offer, but it has since sold out.

Thank you for the clarification; I snoozed and I lost.

Cheers again for such prompt answers.

No probs,:). Pretty decent ram the team group stuff. Been using the vulcan red c10 kit and it has been rock solid.

The ones I have been posting are C11 correct? I'd have no idea about the actual difference between them mind...

Edit: bar this which for all I know could be totally accurate or utter tosh!

So C10 takes 10 cycles to respond, whereas C11 takes 11?

Yep, c11. Slightly slacker timings than the kit im using. Which tbh youll only really notice in synthetic benchmarks. The c10 kit does give you a bit of headroom for overclocking the ram, by slackening certain timings and running with a higher voltage you can run the ram at a faster speed.

Given this is the first build I've ever done, and the first time I've purchased individual components for one, I have green horn fear of overclocking! I'm also only going to be gaming on this one, so I've no idea if overclocked RAM is 'necessary'?

But I've gone for a water-cooled CPU to leave that option open to me in the future, at least regarding CPU overclocking. Does overclocked RAM need its own cooling system?

No, ram runs pretty cool so it will be fine as it is. As for performance improvements, there isnt a very substantial gain from running overclocked ram for games. I do run my kit in sig oc'd, but thats only for a few benchmarks.

Good to hear. Thank you.

If let's say I ever desire to expand the memory up to 16GB (unlikely, but just in case), would I be able to run the Red and Orange variants together?

I'm just trying to gauge just how precisely similar RAM needs to be for such things, and whether there is some form of inbuilt irksome-ometer that detects that it is not the exact same model etc.

If you do eventually add another kit of the c11 stuff, they will work fine together. Quite often though, there are a few other voltages that may need increased. When you fill every ram slot this places extra strain on the memory controller, increasing the voltages helps with this.

That's good to hear they'll work together. It seems unlikely I'll ever need to double the RAM for my purposes, but it's good to plan ahead.

I take increasing the voltage is done through the already present kit (motherboard I assume?) rather than aftermarket parts?
