Can it be done?

It would be tough to get that 8800GTS in there and cooled adequately. If you're willing to forego that then yes, I think that would be quite possible.

I just think it would be so cool to have a system that can play games like UT3, the size of a console. To bad the rights to BTX & DTX belong the system makers now, instead of on the open market. If the PSU is not on the inside, plenty more room with much less heat.

The NES thingy is nothing new, however cramming your compontents inside would be.
Maybe you could do it if you had an external cooling tower, maybe you could hide that inside another console, like a verticle xbox360 maybe lol

I think providing you switched to an ITX board, fitting the components wouldn't be to much of an issue you'd probably have to use a PCIe cable to mount the card to an edge or the top somewhere, and you'd probably want an exhaust type GPU so you could duct air into it from outside through a vent somewhere and it could exhaust out of the system.

The difficulty is always going to be powering it. If you put any GPU in, an external brick type PSU just isn't going to cut it, you're going to need a proper PSU. Any idea of the internal dimensions of a NES, could you squeeze an SFX PSU in there perhaps?

Surely this is screaming out for and AMD A10, the onboard GPU will probably be as powerful as an 8800GTS. Seeing as 8800GTS's are years old now.

You could power it from an external brick with a picoPSU, easily small enough on a ITX board.

To be fair, a mid-range GPU will eat your 8800 these days, and they typically run much colder and are much smaller.

Would be perfect for an A10 APU and itx case with pico psu. Cooling is another issue though. Even my 65W A10-5700 struggles to keep cool in my htpc (cooled by a low profile Scythe Kozuti). Certainly wouldn't want to put in one of those slightly faster 95W rated APU's.

I think the 8800 GTS will be considerably more capable than any current APU, though of course it does come down to what games you wish to play on the system. For some older more basic games the A10 is sufficient, but to keep you're options open you really want a discrete GPU.

10 x 8 x 3.5 inches equates to 254 x 203.2 x 88.9 mm and an SFX PSU is 125 x 100 x 63.5 so it's close but I think you'll only have about 150 mm left for the board and an ITX is 170.

It could probably be done by raising the PSU up to the roof and having it over hang the motherboard by 2cm.

The 8800 GTS wont fit because of the height. As paradigm said though you could easily have a big upgrade and fit anything under 8 inches because that's the depth of the case.
