ok so i just bought a new computer

the problem is i got my windows xp from my college im worrying if i allow auto updates

it will crash the computer?

a guys told me that he didnt use a legit copy and microsoft crashed his computer when he was doing auto updates

the problem here is i dont know if my copy that i got from college is legit or not i did get it 1 year ago.

i dont really have the cash at the moment too just go out and buy an operating system

will it be safe too use the college version the the technician gave too me?

or is that guy that told me microsoft crashed his computer just lieing. i would have thought that would have been illegal to crash someones comp

so do i wait 3 months and get an operating system or use this operating system?

any help would be appreciated.

It wont crash your pc, but you will get a note saying that you may have an illegal copy of windws, and not allow you to logon.

Best bet is to ask the guy that got the copy for you wheter it'll work without activation, or, wheter it really is a 'hooky' copy.. if it is dodgy, then this is against the law...

Of course there are always ways around this, but i doubt very much that ocuk would condone passing such information around, as it's against the law.

Just use the operating system you've got, if you're that worried about it save and buy a new one when you can afford it.
In the mean time nothing bad will happen, MS will not crash the computer, your mate must have been talking rubbish or had a unstable setup.
If it isn't a legit copy of XP then chances are you'll find out when you install and activate it online.

Your college is probably signed up with Microsoft (can't remember the name of the service), so the college will get tons of copies of XP/Vista to give to students who need it.

So yes, enable automatic updates and don't worry about it :)

Yeh, a lot of uni's are part of a microsoft partnership scheme, microsoft provide free software, but recieve benefits from new technology developed.

Even if its not legit it will just give you a 30day warning before it will cease up and stop working. You just have to activate it online to remove that, on xp the microsoft guys used to provide new activation keys if you said yours wasnt working, doubt thats company policy though.
