Basically I'm after a laptop which HDMI out, and I think i've found the one i like. The laptop runs desktop on 1360xsomething I think. Anyway, it has a nVidia 9300GS 256MB graphics card. Will this be capable of outputting 1080p to my 42" TV without lagging? The processor is a Core 2 Duo T6400.

Also, can onboard chips such as Intel® HD Graphics.Intel® HM55 output 1080p too?

thanks

It depends on what you're doing. The display adapter should be able to output that resolution without a problem via HDMI - check the dispaly adapter spec sheet to confirm that.

If you're talking about playing video at that resolution, depending on the quality and nature of the video, as well as your hardware/software configs, you may run into problems. DVD quality should be OK, playing blu-rays or high def could strain things a little, based on my experiences.

If you're talking about gaming, I'd probably forget it, that adapter will struggle even on the laptop resolution with any recent 3D games.

I have a laptop with GT330M graphics and that does it ok... so hopefully if you get one with that kinda power or more you should be fine. :)
