Can my 7900GT output 1080p over DVI?

I might be buying a 1080p HDTV in a few months, which will replace my current monitor as well as being used for my Xbox 360. Is it possible to set my desktop resolution to 1920*1080?

Also, would this resolution be impractical when it comes to PC games? I only have BF 2142 atm and probably won't buy many PC games for a long time. I know BF 2142 can be set to any res using the command line, but what about other games that don't have a 16:9 option?

thats a pretty high res for the card on 2142 i think, maybes mean you'll have to turn the settings down a little..

I use a 6150 IGP and I'm using 1920x1080 32 bit, 60hz. Desktop works fine. So I don't see why yours won't. For gaming though could be a problem, suprinsingly my X1900XT seemed to be really smooth in Oblivion, in fact no different to 1680x1050 oh I might have disabled AA, at that res didn't think i would need it. Didn't really test it though. Flat Out 2 was smooth.

your 7900GT runs bf 2142 @ 1680x1050 ?

i wonder at what kinds of framerates

I have never actually used FRAPS to measure the framerate, but judging using my own eyes it is totally smooth and very fast, no stuttering or slowdown at all. That's with all the settings on high and 4xAA.

Btw the 7900GT is clocked at 640/1900.

I am more bothered about actaully setting PC games to 1920*1080, do a lot of games support this 16:9 resolution? I know Half-Life 2 does..

BF 2142, that's it atm :o

I will be buying some old games though, including Doom 3, The Sims 2, and new ones including Crysis, UT2007, STALKER maybe. But mostly shooting and some racing games, old and new.

However my main question has been answered and this is turning into a thread about PC games that support 1080p. I might start a new one in the PC games section...

Im somewhat sure a lot of games will go up to resolutions that high, If they wont go 16:9 then they'll get stretched - which to be honest doesnt distort the pictures. I was running 1024x768 or something on my 37" 720p, and it stretched the games to fit the tv, and they looked WONDERFUL. Never knew 2142 could be forced into this resolution, does it give you more area of view? or just stretch it like my tv ended up doing on its own?

how'd you get your memory to run at 950mhz?

quite impressive

I used a simple pencil mod (shaded in a certain resistor with a HB pencil), which increased the voltage to the memory. I had it as high as 1000mhz at one point, but it gave me a bit of artifacting in 3DMark. Seemed quite risky at the time, what with all the problems with 7900GT's, but its still going strong ;)

Hi,

It is possible to set that resolution, however it will probably be 1080i and not 1080p being output by your graphics card.

When I had my 7800GTX, the option for HDTV timing in the Nv CP went all the way up to 1080i (interlaced). I found that actually, the image quality was better when I switched to the lower 720p even though my LCD TV can output at 1920x1080 it looked better at the lower resolution.

However! Now with my new 8800GTS I have a new option in that list. (yey!) It now includes 1080p. So I tried giving that a blast, but my blast LCD TV doesn't support it. :( Boo! So now my graphics card is capable of outputting at that rate, my stupid TV won't do it.

What I'm trying to say is, that I'm not 100% sure the 79xx series can do 1080p? I might be wrong! It might of just been the 78xx series, but I can say for sure that the option is now there on the new G80. So as long as your new TV can do that output then you may still be dissapointed if the card cannot. ;)

Hope that makes some sense!

Of course it can do 1080p, 1080p is just 1920x1080 resolution, my x800xt lets me play counter strike source at 1920x1200

Exactly, of course it will work. To firegod, what display do you have, and what is the native resolution? Does it support a 1920x1080 input. I'm sure if my integrated Nvidia allows 1920x1080 a top of the range 7800GTX will. Sounds more like your monitor is a 1360x768 screen, supports 1080i and the edid information was restricting you from choosing 1080p, for a good reason.

I'm running a 6800GT on a Sony Bravia X 46" at 1080p resolution and the only game that I have that doesn't run at that resolution is Silent Hunter 3. I have to turn the detail down a bit with some games, but mostly it's great.

I must admit that I am seriously considering getting an 8800 card, but I'm worried that my A64 3500 and 1 gb of RAM will be a major bottleneck.

He is using a DVI - HDMI connection going from the thread title. That means it'll either be 1080p or 1080i on the HDTV. Yeah, you can just move the slider up to 1920x1080 (of course you can do that) but then in the other menu (see below) you have to say if it's 1080i or 1080p and all I was saying was that for me, 1080p was not there until I put a G80 in my PC. :)

Like I said in my first post.... "I may be wrong!" ;) It sounds as if it's just my TV with only being a 26". :)

You don't need to run at 1980x1020 when connecting to a HDTV. You can just clone using your PC monitor as the primary display and output your PC desktop onto the TV. Of course it's likely that there will be some downscale but it's barely noticeable on my 40" Sony. I'd only do this for gaming and not for using the TV as a main display for web browsing etc.

Is your 26" a 1080P? No. So there is no point in sending 1080p to the screen, and the edid information removed that setting because your hardware doesn't support it.

Pretty damn obvious, the 7800GTX was not at fault. Unless you happen to connect a Sharp XD1 and cannot select 1920x1080, 60hz progressive. But you don't, you have a 730p/1080i set so 1080p is removed.
