Can my CPU run 64-bit OS?

Hi, I have a Dell Vostro 1700 with a Intel Core2 Duo T5270 @ 1.40 GHz.

I assumed it was just 32 bit as the OS that came with it was 32 but my friend tells me I could run 64 bit Ubuntu or Windows on this?

Also is this worthwhile for improving performance?

Yes you can. I would'nt bother switching unless you plan on using more then 4GB of ram.
