can my gpu game on a 4k monitor

i think GTX 780 at 4k is performance comparable of a GTX 650 or 660 at 1080.
playable ? probably! if you dont mind turning setting down and be ok with 30 fps

Depends a bit on the game and settings.

If you keep MSAA low and/or use FXAA instead you can usually get reasonable performance - might sometimes have to drop the odd setting also especially stuff that depends on fillrates for performance.

Your going to see a big drop but it possible to play most games, with reasonable enough framerates, with mostly high or maxed settings with a single 780 on 4K currently.

Personally I'm not entirely convinced with gaming at 4K - depending what games you play and what input devices you use. Quite a few games you will find the UI scaling a potential issue and/or getting the mouse setup right not to mention the performance and that the current crop of 4K monitors seem to struggle a bit with overdrive and similar in fast paced games. For gaming if I wanted higher than 1920x and wasn't going for 120+Hz I'd probably be looking at a good 2560x panel.

Be fine, just don't go nuts with aa and be sensible with other settings. Ideally you'd want a pair but you'll still get a decent experience from the single 780.

To give you an idea, knock 10-20% off the GTX780 OC performance shown here:

(These are all my own results)

Crysis 3

BF3

Sleeping Dogs - Normal AA

All of the current crop of games* should be playable at a mixture of high and medium settings with a little bit of shader based AA (if required).

*Except the likes of Watch Dogs with its *cough* amazingly well optimised engine */cough*.

Nice results there owen. May i ask what cooling you have on the 290X?

Stock ref as per my posts in the 290 Pro thread :)

It is now running in a Corsair 250D which theoretically should be better than my old Define R3 for GPU cooling as the cooler can pull cool air directly from outside the case.

I might look at going for a full custom WC look but that is for another thread.

And here is my testing on a Titan at 4K. The Titan is fractionally faster than the 780 but not by much. If I am getting 40 fps, the 780 will be 38 or thereabouts.

I am personally happy with AOC 2868, did not discover a single dead pixel
and for example AC 4 Black Flag looks gorgeous .If only AMD fixed 60Hz problem..
One GTX 780Ti struggles from time to time even at 1250MHz

well it looks like I would be cutting it to close to run my games properly at that resolution and I don't want an sli setup, even the titan doesn't have that much head room left, I was interested in the new Samsung 4k u28d590 but not so keen on no vesa stand, so I think its best to wait for the new gcards from NVidia like an 880 and see how that fairs, and few more different 4k monitors to arrive...

This is questionable given its rumoured 32ROP / 256bit back end. Even with crazy fast GDDR5 it will be somewhat lacking.

Time will tell of course.

Agree, but I doubt Nv would release a 800 series card with 256bit. I think it's all rumours tbh. Since 4k is here it'll be awhile before it's widely sold. 256bit struggles at 1440p let alone 4k. So I think all this talk about 256bit bus is rubbish. The 870 or 800 are the cheapest cards. It's looking like (imho) 800Ti will again be the top end gaming card that will handle 4k well. At least that's my take on it :)
