I'd go for a no on that one mate looks pretty terminal to me.

If it has REALLY important data on it and you have the cash you could probably have someone retrive the data but the drive is almost certainly dead in my opinion

I was told that if I could find the same model of the hdd I could just replace the board, is that true ?

I guess it's worth a shot. You're gonna need a new hdd anyway...

What model is it?

Hmm, that's only about £30 IIRC...

How did you do it to begin with? / How long have you had the hdd?

Yep, tis true. thats what the data recovery companies do.

I imagine you gotta make sure you get an identical board, if you dont you'll run the risk of corrupting the data on the platters...

If it isnt corrupted already, Thats some serious damage

Haha.

I'm not quite sure how it happened really, it was in an external casing and when I turned it I saw smoke coming out. Could it have been the faulty external casing/power supply ?

Yes you can use the same HD system board and swap it over. The system board must have 'EXACTLY' the same chipset on it and the HD model must be 'EXACTLY' the same. If you don't the chances of you succeeding are greatly reduced. Recovering a HD is around £300 up... :(

I have a dead HD with all our photos from the last 3-4 years on it. Going to salvage eventually but can't afford it now. Was reshuffling HDs while the machine was turned on and touched the bottom of one HD with the top of another... smoke... dead... :(

Yeah I know - idiot...

I'll just get a new hard drive I guess, there wasn't any important stuff in it. Just looked at the b-grade's hard drive on OCUK, the 250gb (£40) is already gone. :(

Erncilator you really want them ? How much would postage cost ? :D

:) Like £5.50 or so I think if you send cheapest recorded :). Ill give you £7 for it as it'll prob need to be wrapped? :)

< does art at uni and is using the shiney platters from inside.

email km209 kent ac uk? :D:D:
