Can my new GPU give me better utilisation of my CPU?

Hey guys,

Today I just recieved my new 2080ti GPU.

I played my usual game of Battlefield 5 MP Conquest 64 man server...to see temps and usage of the GPU / CPU..

Now my CPU temps were great, averaging 50-50c under load and the GPU peaking at 60c..

Now, this is not what interests me..what interests me is that the GPU providing more horse power in the game, has seen my CPU utilisation increase across all cores from around 80% to around 95% all cores..

So basically what im asking is, can my new GPU having more grunt give a little more "life" and usage on the CPU aswell?

Cheers guys!

As far as I know a CPU can push only so many frames to the GPU. This I think does not change. All a better GPU does is allow more frames to do rendered. So if the CPU utilisation increases from 80% to 95% that means that the maximum potential of the CPU is being used.

Take Gears 5. I have an average CPU Framerate (game) 363.7fps (2.7ms)
Average CPU Framerate (render) 268fps (3.7ms)
Average GPU framrate 123.2fps (8.1ms)
Average framerate 123.5fps (8.1)

Looking at the ms times, I am 99.90% GPU bound. The GPU can't keep up with the CPU.

At 4k @ highest I am 100% GPU bound for Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

You always want to be GPU bound. You can download a demo for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and run the benchmark.

So to get better performance I should get a better GPU. At least in these two games.

Your CPU is running almost flat out pushing frames to your GPU. IIRC 95% is about the optimum CPU usage figure - any more and performance actually decreases. You could get a better CPU, but how many FPS are you getting?

Which CPU?

Depends, but with a 2080ti its 9700k/9900k or 3800x and above. Intel are releasing a new 9900k that has an all core boost of 5GHz called the 9900ks.

The 3800x overclocking is more RAM side. RAM overclocking is better in that you get decent results reliably. The issue with the 3800x is that RAM overclocking is a pain and low temps are needed for a good boost. RAM overclocking and tightening timing is basically a requirement for good game performance. If you with the lottery you can get an all core overclock to 4.4-4.5GHz. Most CPU's won't do that, so you would have to bin. Even so the stock 3800x can hit 11300 cpu in time spy and 11500 with good cold weather. PBO does help with boosts but the 1.0.0.4 BIOS will make most core overclocking point less.

The 9900ks you just need to drop in decent RAM at xmp settings and its done. Maybe increase the clock speeds if you care or go to work on the RAM timings if you love pain. A whole lot less work and knowledge required. The 9700k is more work but will get the job done.

The 3900x is has issues with gaming, basically you need to disable the slow CCD and overclock the fast one to as close to 4.6GHz as you can. Then overclock the RAM side and tighten timings.

As far as I could tell with the 3900x there are big latency issues with data going between two CCD's. So you always want your game to run on one CCD. One CCD also can overclock well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSGQu4q0mNo

hmm..im not too sure on OCing. Would a mild OC benifit me much? as the performance right now is pretty good.

Which 2080ti did you go with?

I went for the Zotac Blower card. Two reasons, price, and the blower style. Yes I know they are loud but I game with my headphones on anyway and I like that no hot air circulates in my PC.

You will find blower cards far quieter if you mount them vertically as in the Silvertone FT05 and FT02.

I have a Lian-Li PC-O11 and find the vertical orientation on this case is..well..my cup of tea.

But thanks for the info, thats interesting and will keep in mind if im ever on the lookout for a new case :)

If your happy with performance, then leave it. If not find a guide and get overclocking.

8700K does all core boost of 4.3Ghz standard, its almost a guaranteed overclock of 4.7Ghz all core with everything else auto.(4.7 is single core boost).

May not increase your max frames too much but will give a nice nudge on minimums.

With that kind of FPS you can afford to crank the quality up as well.

Lol!! Thought I might get a little stick :p

Will consider ocing...

One thing I will do as advised it try cranking the visuals up. Even though it looks sweet at med/high there is always room for improvement I suppose :D

Hey, your new GPU takes "life" away from your CPU. Or in other words you are more CPU bound now.

What you can do to shift the "bottleneck" to the 2080 Ti, is to increase the gaming resolution to 4K, or 8K, whatever comes first :)
